TENNY FROST

Executive Director of Alumni Relations, Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley

Words of Wisdom: Remain flexible. Just when you think you have found the right balance, something will change and put it out of balance and cause you to re-think and strategize your priorities and plans.

When Tenny was expecting the birth of her second child in 2002, she created a job share for her position as the Director of Alumni Relations at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.  The job share (60% - 3 days a week / per person) thrived for two and a half years.  Then, in 2004 when her job share partner decided to move to Seattle, she was promoted to Executive Director of Alumni Relations and given the opportunity to hire a new full-time Director to work for her and help manage the growing staff and projects. This allowed Tenny to remain part-time (three days a week) when her children were young. Slowly over the past few years, she has increased her hours / days in the office and she is currently working a flexible, full-time work arrangement.  She continues to enjoy her work very much and the flexibility her employer provides her is a key ingredient for her happiness and success. All of her hard work continues to pay off and she values the community she has built and nourished over the years at UC Berkeley. She has shared her work model with other Cal staff and graduates from the Haas School of Business and given them recommendations and guidance on how to continue to be successful in their careers while establishing a flexible work schedule. She also supports a variety of flexible work arrangements for members of her staff. One colleague glowingly remarked that Tenny is “the poster woman for the ‘gedder done’ slogan.”
