Words of Wisdom: Hold on to some part of your vocation if you decide to quit working when you have kids.
With three kids and about 15 years of corporate marketing experience at Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, and Clorox, Mary took a detour from corporate life for a little over two years (2004-2006) by working part-time as a contract Marketing Director for the turnaround team that bought Kern's Nectars from Nestle. This contract gave her the flexibility and cash flow she needed to also work part-time as U.S Communications Coordinator for Nonviolent Peaceforce, an international non-profit seeking to protect human rights and prevent violence. When her contract ended she went back to work full time in order to support her family but the experience of juggling multiple projects (and time zones) while working from home positioned her well for taking on leadership of the West Coast office for MARS advertising.
After seeing firsthand the difference strong parental involvement makes at her own children's school, Mary reached out to St. Anthony's, an inner-city elementary school in Oakland, and designed a quarterly newsletter to help create a sense of community and anchor a development program to fund future needs. A supporter of Mary wrote “it's Mary's commitment to the world by leading by example in such a genuine and generous way that sets her apart.”
