KAREN ALTER
Former Intel VP
Words of Wisdom: All people, and especially gifted ones, have an opportunity and even an obligation to improve the world. Yet those things don’t need to be done in a linear, non-stop fashion. There is no deeper way to live than to nurture our children.
In 2000, Karen left a successful seven-year career at Intel where she was on the fast-track, recruited by Andy Grove himself. She decided to focus on more personal goals, and despite not having met her life partner she had the courage to enter parenthood on her own. She never completely off-ramped, as she always did some advisory work for startups, but those projects were extremely low-key and flexible and she also continued to participate on numerous non-profit boards and is currently doing so. In 2003 her daughter was born so, for her, that changed everything. From early 2004 until May 2007, she worked on a part-time basis for a venture-backed company, scaling up or down as was needed for her responsibilities and value-add. She stopped that particular work in May, to take the summer off, and begin a full-time job search much closer to where she lives. A former Intel colleague stated that “The moment you meet Karen it is impossible not to admire her and respect her. She is full of amazing energy; she is bright and articulate; she is incredibly forthright and honest. Furthermore, Karen is always available to help others. Even with all of her responsibilities, she mentors, connects people for networking, and offers her career and personal advice.”
