HEATHER MCLEOD GRANT

Nonprofit author and consultant

Words of Wisdom: Don’t try and be perfect – no one is! Take care of yourself – if you neglect yourself, it all falls apart. Partner with other working moms, as they really “get it” and it’s much easier to job share. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion (and intuition!), as that is what ultimately leads to happiness and success.

Heather has forged her own unique path, combining her interests in leadership development and non-profits into a career as an author and consultant. After the birth of her daughter, Heather ramped up slowly, starting with working 2-3 days a week the first year back, then ramping up to 3-4 days a week, and finally back to five days a week once her daughter turned three. She has been doing a combination of independent consulting to nonprofits and writing a book – and while it has been demanding at times, it has always allowed her control over her schedule. She has been able to flex when needed in order to balance her family life with her career. She deliberately chose work where she could be her own boss and set her own schedule. Because her husband is the founder of a start-up, it’s essential that one of them had the flexibility. She is an advocate of creating support groups for working women. She founded a group for women in the HR-OD-leadership fields who meet quarterly to update each other on professional information but also to provide personal support, as almost all of them are working moms. Most recently, she is co-author (with another working mom – so you could call this a job share!) of a new book coming out this fall called Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High Impact Nonprofits. The book is already in the Number One nonprofit title on Amazon.com! A business-school classmate said “Heather has never hesitated to take risks and explore new opportunities, and this sense of adventure makes her a role model for many women who would like to try new things but may not know how.”
